The Oregon Jumping Slug
A couple of friends introduced me to the idea of a slug that lives in Oregon and is able to leap 6ft into the air. My first thought was, "Yeah right." But, I started looking around and found that Oregon actually boasts 4 varieties of jumping slugs. With some of them residing in the Portland area.

  • "Helphillia burringoni" for the keeled jumping slug
  • "Hemphillia gladulosa" for the warty jumping slug
  • "Hemphillia malonei" for the Malone jumping slug
  • "Hemphillia pahterina" for the Panther jumping slug

    The Public 8-ball

    Ninkasi - Goddess of Beer (and other beer things)
    The "Hymn to Ninkasi" from around 1800BC written by a Sumerian poet. It contains an ancient recipe for brewing beer.
    The American Homebrew Association actually has a Ninkasi award that they give out. They also are looking for judges for their contests and strongly urge folks to get certified with the Beer Judge Certification Program.

    Those bizarre Italians
    An Italian coffin maker has decided to liven up his web page advertising with some bikini clad women modeling the caskets. Um...and some of the poses...some are good enough for a toned-down Playboy. Truly bizarre.
